Whether you're a student on a PGWP, a Startup Visa applicant waiting on your PR, or an entrepreneur on a C11 — the wrong move now can cost you your status. The right legal advice changes everything.
The Bottom Line
Processing times for work permit extensions inside Canada now average 241 days. Immigration lawyers and IRCC both recommend submitting your application at least 90 days before your permit expires. If you're reading this, that window may already be closing.
Canadian immigration policy has changed dramatically. The Start-Up Visa Program closed to new applicants on December 31, 2025. The C11 work permit was overhauled in May 2025. PGWP eligibility rules have been restructured. If your work permit is expiring in 2026, the landscape you entered Canada under no longer exists — and the stakes of getting this wrong have never been higher.
Which Situation Applies to You?
We work with three specific profiles of work permit holders facing expiry. Find your scenario below — each comes with its own legal strategy.
Your Post-Graduation Work Permit is expiring and you have a business idea — or you've already started one. A C11 entrepreneur work permit could be your bridge to staying in Canada legally while building your company.
You've submitted your Startup Visa permanent residence application and you're waiting — potentially for years. Your work permit is expiring. You need to extend it to remain legally authorized to work while IRCC processes your PR.
You've been operating your business in Canada on a C11 permit and it's coming up for renewal. This is not a rubber-stamp process. Officers scrutinize whether your business is generating genuine significant benefit to Canada.
Our Process
A paid consultation with Sobirovs Law Firm is a working session — not a sales call. You walk away with a clear legal strategy specific to your situation.
Select a time that works for you. We confirm the consultation and send you a preparation questionnaire.
Our lawyers review your immigration history, business status, and current permit before the meeting.
We walk through your options, flag risks, and give you a concrete action plan — with timelines.
You decide whether to proceed with us or on your own. Either way, you leave informed and with a plan.
Letting your work permit expire without a plan is not a neutral decision. The consequences are immediate and lasting.

Common Questions
Yes — if you submit your extension application before your current permit expires, you receive implied status, which allows you to remain in Canada and continue working under the same conditions while your application is pending. However, implied status rules must be applied correctly. Consult a lawyer before your permit expires.
No. IRCC does not allow PGWP holders to renew or extend a post-graduation work permit. Once it expires, you must qualify for a different type of work authorization — such as a C11 entrepreneur permit, a spousal open work permit, or an employer-specific work permit. A consultation will help you identify which route fits your situation.
Yes — but only if you are already in Canada and currently hold an SUV-specific work permit. As of December 19, 2025, IRCC stopped accepting new SUV work permit applications but carved out an exception for existing permit holders who are extending while their PR is pending. IRCC has also committed to prioritizing the PR processing of those inside Canada on an active SUV work permit.
No. As of May 27, 2025, IRCC confirmed that work experience gained through operating your own C11 business does not count toward CEC eligibility. This means you cannot use the C11-to-CEC pathway to PR that many entrepreneurs previously relied on. Alternative PR strategies — including PNP entrepreneur streams and Federal Skilled Worker — must be considered as part of your long-term plan.
At minimum 90 days before expiry, but ideally 4–6 months out given current processing times. Inside-Canada work permit extensions are currently taking approximately 241 days to process. Missing your window can force you to leave Canada and apply from abroad, which resets the clock entirely and may disrupt your business or family situation.
A paid consultation is a working legal strategy session — not a sales presentation. Before you arrive, our lawyers review your file. During the session, we assess your specific options, identify the risks in your situation, and give you a concrete action plan. The consultation fee ensures you receive serious, accountable legal attention rather than generic information.
